Dontel Highsmith of
Dowagiac (Mich.) is a name on the rise early on this season in the Great Lakes State.
After scoring 42 in his junior debut last Friday in a 72-60 win over Allegan, Highsmith topped that with 56 more Tuesday in a victory over Plainwell. He also dished out eight assists.
"I knew that he would score steadily around the 30s, low 40s, but I had no idead he would go for 56," Dowagiac head coach Danum Hunt told the
Daily News. "They (Plainwell) tried man-to-man, they tried zone. His outside shooting has improved so much that it doesn't matter what kind of defense they play."
Highsmith, a 6-foot-1 guard, earned Banks Hoops (Stephen Bell/Bankhoops.com) Sophomore All-State honors last season from, averaging a little over 12 points per game while playing the role of facilitator for an 18-7 Chieftains squad.
Dowagiac is located in the southwest corner of Michigan with a population of under 10,000. The Chieftains return to action next Tuesday against Coloma.
