The Sac-Joaquin Section – hardly known as California's hotbed for boys golf – cleaned up at the CIF California State Championships Wednesday at San Gabriel Country Club. Granite Bay (Calif.)
won the team title with 374 strokes and Del Oro (Loomis)
senior Austin Smotherman won the individual crown by shooting a four-under par 67, to edge Santa Margarita's (Rancho Santa Margarita)
Beau Hossler by one stroke.
Hossler's teammate Andrew Levitt and Foothill (Pleasanton)
junior Nicolo Galletti each shot 69s.
Granite Bay was the first SJS team to win a title since the state tournament was reinstated in 2004. The team was led by freshman Jeffrey Inouye-Wong (72), while Brandon Baumgarten and Chuck Pedone shot 73s. Alex Gibbs (76) and Bryan Wise (79) rounded out Granite Bay's total.
Three Northern California squads finished on top as Foothill was second at 376 and Stevenson (Pebble Beach)
was third at 380. Torrey Pines-San Diego
(381), Santa Margarita (385) and Clovis West-Fresno
(388) finished fourth through sixth. St. Francis-Mountain View's
Jonathan Garrick also finished under par at 70 to finish fifth, while Ponderosa-Shingle Springs'
Corey Pereira, Righetti-Santa Maria's
Reilly McMahon and Torrey Pines' Ryan Burgess all tied for sixth at 71.Complete results
