Covering High School Sports in America
The boys basketball team from St. Joseph (Santa Maria, Calif.) launched a four-state odyssey on Friday which will include 15 games on a long road trip, according to Eric Sondheimer, who has covered the preps since 1976 for the Los Angeles Times.

Summer basketball gets bigger every year.

The first stop for the Knights' van is Tempe, Ariz., where they will participate in the Arizona State University team camp. Then they move to Las Vegas, Nev., where they will play Bishop Gorman on Monday. On Tuesday they leave for Salt Lake City, Utah where they will take on Judge Memorial and Highland.

On Wednesday they will travel to Boise, Idaho, to meet Timberline. The final stop is Seattle, Wash., where they will compete in the University of Washington team camp.

They will return home on Sunday.

Coach Tom Mott's hopes are high with the return of three starters - including 6-7 junior Keith Datu - from last season's Class 4A state quarterfinalist.

* Sondheimer also reports that 6-10 rising freshman Trevor Stanback has enrolled at Chaminade (West Hills, Calif.), which already has 6-8 and 6-6 returnees.
