USA Hockey reported that four-time defending champion USA was nipped by Canada 3-2 on Sunday during the annual International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Men's World Hockey Championships in Sochi, Russia.
The Americans, who had won gold from 2009-12, out-shot the Canadians by a huge 35-12 margin, but goalie Philippe Desrosiers was up to the task as he turned aside all but two shots. Scoring goals for the USA were Connor Clifton of Matawan, N.J., and Michael McCarron of Macomb, Mich.
Trailing 2-1, Canada scored the game's final two goals, the winner coming with 3:24 left in the middle period.
During the entire tournament, Tyler Motte of St. Clair, Mich., paced the Americans with five goals and added two assists. J.T. Compher of Northbrook, Ill., was the leader with four assists and he added three goals. Steven Santini
