The LaCrosse Tribune is among the media outlets reporting that sharpshooting guard Matt Thomas of Onalaska (Wis.) gave head coach Fred Hoiberg and Iowa State a verbal commitment Thursday night, becoming the first pledge for the Cyclones in the Class of 2013.

Thomas visited Iowa State last week and decided on the program over Virginia.

"I knew I couldn’t go wrong with either one of them," Thomas told the Tribune. "It came down to distance because I want my family to be able to watch me play."

Thomas averaged 21.3 points per game as a junior to help Onalaska go 27-1 and capture Wisconsin's Division 2 state title. He tallied 30 points, 11 rebounds and three assists in the Hilltoppers' 55-38 thrashing of Kaukauna in the championship game.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound future Cyclone, who has already piled up 1,290 career points, was a first team Associated Press All-State selection, the only non-senior of the group.
