Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) can breathe a sigh of relief, as it managed to avoid becoming another victim in the
MaxPreps Xcellent 25 to be upset Friday night. The Cavaliers received a scare from
Round Rock Westwood (Austin), but staged a fourth quarter comeback to come away with a 28-24 victory.
With No. 2 Grayson (Loganville, Ga.), No. 4 Skyline (Texas) and No. 22 St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) having already fallen, Lake Travis trailed 24-22 with three minutes to play when senior quarterback
Baker Mayfield found
Varshaun Nixon for an 18-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, but the Cavaliers hung on for the 28-24 road win.
Lake Travis came into the game ranked No. 9 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25, while Round Rock Westwood entered the game ranked No. 78 in the state of Texas.
Lake Travis jumped out to an early lead, scoring two touchdowns (one missed PAT) and a field goal in the first quarter to take a 16-0 lead.
Round Rock Westwood responded with 17 unanswered points to take a 17-16 lead into halftime.
The Warriors opened up the scoring in the second half with a defensive touchdown, giving them a 24-16 lead. Mayfield responded with a touchdown pass to make it 24-22, setting up his own late-game heroics.
Lake Travis (3-0) now sets its sights on a home game against A&M Consolidated (College Station, Texas) next Friday while Round Rock Westwood will travel to Cedar Park (Texas).
