More students participated in high school sports last year than ever before.

High school sports are more popular than ever.

According to a survey commissioned by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), more than 7.7 million students participated in high school sports during the 2012-13 school year.

That figure is an increase of over 21,000 participants from a year ago.

In particular, the number of girls participating in high school sports continues to grow. The amount of participants is up 15,000 from the 2011-12 school year, marking the 24th consecutive year in which the number of female participants has grown.

NFHS executive director Bob Gardiner was happy with the growth in participation, given the obstacles that some schools and students face.

"While we recognize that many schools are experiencing challenges with funding high school sports programs, we are encouraged that schools are responding to the challenges and that more and more students are involved in high school sports," he said in a release. "Playing sports within the school setting continues to be the desire of more than 55 percent of students enrolled in our nation's high schools."

More states will get their sports seasons underway on Friday night as high school football continues to kick off around the country.
