The Chicago Tribune is reporting
that a 20-year-old man was shot and killed outside of a high school basketball game involving Chicago Public Schools rivals Simeon and Morgan Park on Wednesday night.
According to the Tribune, two people were taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting.
Tempers flared on the floor between the teams during postgame handshakes. Video of the incident shows heated words being exchanged between players and adults – most notably Simeon head coach Robert Smith.
Violent incidents have been an all-too-regular storyline at Chicago Public Schools games in recent years. Over the weekend, a contest involving Corliss and South Shore was called off
when a fight broke out.
Wednesday's game between Simeon and Morgan Park was a highly anticipated affair as both entered unbeaten in Red-South Division play. Simeon is ranked No. 7 nationally by MaxPreps and the state's three-time defending Class 4A state champion.
Simeon was also the high school home of Bulls star Derrick Rose, who made an emotional plea for peace in the city last year during an adidas shoe launch.
