Jake Knapp shot a sizzling 10-under-par 61 to win the U.S. Open qualifier at Newport Beach, Calif. The
Estancia (Costa Mesa, Calif.) senior, along with five others, now is qualified to compete in Sectional qualifying on June 4. He took medalist honors by six strokes.
Knapp burned up his final nine holes with eight birdies and an eagle for a 29. His 61 was one stroke short of the course record shared by professionals Nick Price and Tony Purtzer.
It's not his lowest score, however. He fired a 58 at the Cosa Mesa Country Club.
