Covering High School Sports in America
As signing day winded down, the most newsworthy items involving Greater Houston area recruits included three switches and one big time late commitment.

Brenham defensive end Brandon Alexander, the area's top uncommitted recruit heading into this week, chose Texas A&M on Wednesday morning. Alexander had narrowed his finalists down to Texas A&M and Texas and also had offers from several other BCS conference schools including Florida, Arkansas, TCU, Oklahoma State and Baylor.

Three local players made late switches. Perhaps the most notable change came from Cypress Creek running back Jermichael Selders, who signed with Baylor on Wednesday morning. Selders had long been committed to West Virginia, but began to consider other options after changes in West Virginia's coaching staff.

Once he visited the Baylor campus less than two weeks before signing day, Selders - who ran for more than 2,700 yards in his sophomore and junior seasons before missing his senior season with a torn ACL - developed an affinity for the Bears and it grew enough to the point that he felt confident in signing with the up and coming Big 12 program.

Other area players who made late switches include Dulles defensive back Zoey Williams, who signed with New Mexico after previously being committed to UTEP. Chavez receiver Jafus Gaines, who had been committed to Houston, signed with Texas State on Wednesday.

The three Houston-area players in the MaxPreps national Top 100 - Westfield defensive tackle Desmond Jackson, Cleveland defensive end Cedric Reed and Brookshire Royal running back Brandon Williams - all signed with the schools they had committed to. Jackson and Reed inked their letters of intent to Texas and Williams is already on the Oklahoma campus, attending classes.
