In this space we regularly document when basketball players reach the 1,000- or 2,000-point plateau for their careers. Those certainly are fine accomplishments worthy of attention, but Jewell Loyd
is nearing an entirely different level.
The Niles West (Skokie, Ill.)
senior and Notre Dame recruit is only 68 points shy of 3,000 for her career. According to the Chicago Tribune, Loyd is averaging nearly 30 points a game, meaning she could achieve that feat later this week with a big game or two. The Wolves have two games on the schedule this week.
A quick glance at the Illinois High School Association record book shows that the 5-foot-9 Loyd would be the seventh girls player to hit the 3,000-point mark. The state record is 4,031 points by Brittany Johnson, who played for East Richland (Olney, Ill.) from 2003-07.
During that same time (2003-06), Adrian McGowen of Goodrich (Texas) was setting the national points record of 5,424.
