De La Salle Collegiate (Warren, Mich.)
started the 2012 baseball season with a 2-14 record.
On Saturday it came within one game of, perhaps, the greatest comeback in Michigan history when it lost the Division I state championship game 9-6 to Hudsonville (Mich.)
The Pilots, who won seven straight playoff games, closed their Cinderella campaign with a 20-23 record. Hudsonville, by contrast, finished at 33-5.
Concerning Hudsonville's decisive four-run sixth inning, De La Salle coach Matt Cook told Tom Markowski of the Detroit News, "Those things happen. We had to regroup and play baseball. We just made too many mistakes (five errors). There is no quit in this team. That tells you what these kids are like. It was like that all season, the same as it was today."
