LeBron James once sought by Notre Dame for football

LeBron James apparently was good enough as a high school athlete to be offered a football scholarship to the University of Notre Dame, according to a story in the Palm Beach Post.

When current Ohio State University coach Urban Meyer was an assistant at Notre Dame, he offered James a scholarship during his sophomore year at St. Vincent-St. Mary (Akron, Ohio).

"He was a receiver and I was a receiver's coach," Meyer told the newspaper.

Asked how good James was, Meyer replied, "Great.".

Football's loss obviously has been basketball's gain.
