  • Shannon Smith finished her brilliant softball career on Saturday as Massachusetts' all-time strikeout queen after pitching Milford (Mass.) to the Division I state softball championship.

The 5-foot-7 senior right-hander struck out 13 - including the No. 3-4-5 hitters in the seventh inning - to stifle Agawam 1-0 in the finale. She yielded just one hit and retired the last 19 batters while winning the state-title game for the second year in a row and finishing her career with a state-record 1,218 strikeouts.

Ranked No. 12 in MaxPreps Xcellent 25, Milford completed its season with a 26-1 record.

For the second year in a row, a freshman - this time it was Jillian Powers - provided the crucial hit that won the title when she doubled to left with two outs in the sixth inning to score Allie Piergustavo from first base with the game's only run.

Smith, a three-time state Gatorade Player of the Year, will play next year for the University of Kentucky.

Coach Brian Macchi had plenty of praise for his standout pitcher.

He told the Boston Herald, "It's been an outstanding career. To watch her work day in and day out for these four years, she wanted to cap it off with a win today. It just cements her legacy in Milford High athletics and obviously the game of softball in this state ... She's been an outstanding student-athlete to coach. It's been an absolute honor to watch her play."
  • Canon-McMillan (Canonsburg, Pa.) nipped Neshaminy (Langhorne) 4-3 in 12 innings on Friday to win the Class AAAA state softball championship in University Park, Pa.

It was the longest Class AAAA state-title softball game in Pennsylvania history, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. A Class AA finale in 2001 lasted 14 innings.

The last three innings were played under International Tiebreaker rules, which start each inning with a runner on second base and no outs. Both teams scored one run in the 10th and 11th.

Senior pitcher Alayna Astuto, who took a no-hitter into the 10th inning, went the distance and struck out 18. She got the win when freshman Linda Rush slammed a two-run homer in the top of the 12th inning.

Astuto told the Tribune-Review, "It just kept going on and on and on. My heart dropped (when Rush connected). I thought, 'Please go over.' "

The Big Macs won their first state title with an almost flawless 25-1 record. Neshaminy finished 23-3.
  • It never gets old for the Hoover (North Canton, Ohio) softball team.

That was the theme printed on t-shirts Saturday as the Vikings shut out Elyria 7-0 for their third consecutive Division I state title and seventh overall. Ranked No. 4 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25, Hoover completed a 34-0 season with a 45-game winning streak and became Ohio's first large-school winner to finish undefeated.

Coach Jerry Goodpasture told the Akron Beacon Journal, "I've said many times when you get to the final two, you better play some defense and have good pitching. That's what we had today. Had it the other day, too (during a 15-3 win over Mentor), so as long at that continues we're all right."

Hoover made just one error in the final two games and received outstanding pitching from junior Tara Thacker, who allowed just three hits while posting her second shutout in a state-title game. She finished the year with a 22-0 record.

The Vikings won 21 games by 10 or more runs and set an unofficial state record with 404 hits. Junior shortstop Jenna Lilley, who was named Gatorade Ohio Softball Player of the Year, finished with a lofty .690 batting average.

  • The powerhouse Greenwood (Bowling Green, Ky.) softball team improved two of its own records on Saturday while notching its third state championship.

The Gators, who are No. 3 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25, defeated Mercy (Louisville) 5-3 in the morning, then blanked five-time state champion Owensboro Catholic (Owensboro) 8-0 in the title game. They bested two state records they had established one day earlier by becoming the first Kentucky team to win 44 games, 44 in a row and also are the first softball team to go undefeated.

Greenwood outscored five tourney opponents 42-4 in the double-elimination field and had a tremendous 378-24 scoring margin during its 44-game campaign.

Coach Penny Reece told the Bowling Green Daily News, "You've got to do it in style. You keep in the winners' bracket. That's big in this tournament. It's set up so that you have to do that."

Junior pitcher Elizabeth Moss was named MVP after pitching a three-hit shutout in the championship game.

Owensboro Catholic coach George Randolph acknowledged, "She's tough to handle. We weren't the only ones that couldn't do nothing with her. She was on top of her game."

  • The unbeaten Greenwood (Bowling Green, Ky.) softball team won twice on Friday and needs two more victories to claim its first state championship. The Gators, who are No. 3 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 rankings, were to play defending champion Mercy (Louisville) this morning in the semifinals of the double-elimination tournament.

Along the way the Gators extended their state record winning streak to 42 games, which also is a Kentucky record for wins in a single year.

They breezed in the morning with a 13-0 rout of Notre Dame Academy (Park Hills) in five innings. Senior shortstop Emily Gravette paced the 19-hit attack with a 4-for-5 performance and drove in four runs.

However, a rainstorm then set the entire tournament back and the team ended up taking in an afternoon movie while awaiting its next opponent.

The wait was worthwhile because the Gators then blanked the state's No. 2-ranked team, Lone Oak (Paducah),  9-0 to gain revenge for last year's  2-1 semifinal loss in eight innings.

Coach Penny Reece told the Bowling Green Daily News, "That's the one that sent us home last year and we felt like we gave that game away. You wait a whole year to get back and they've got that No. 2 ranking. That's a championship game right there and we delivered."

Elizabeth Moss, who lost that game a year ago, also gained her share of satisfaction by holding Lone Oak to six hits and striking out seven.

    Jayme Langbehn interviewed after game.

Jayme Langbehn is just a freshman, but she never will forget her spectacular performance on Friday while sparking Elk River (Minn.) to the Class 3A state softball championship.

The young center fielder reached over the fence not once but twice to rob Prior Lake  players of home runs and enable her team to post a tense 4-3 victory.

She very humbly told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, "I do whatever it takes. I feel like I'm not very important cause I'm just a freshman, but every player counts and I'm happy I did it for my teammates."

First of two catches from Langbehn.

With the score tied 3-3 in the sixth inning, Langbehn snared Shayne Barton's drive to deep center field, fell over the temporary mesh fence, but held on for the out. In the eighth - after she had scored what proved to be the winning run - she reached over the fence to grab Sam Buhmann's drive to left center to preserve the championship.

Buhmann hit a high towering shot and Langbehn raced back to the fence and waited and waited forever, it seemed. She calmly reached over and snatched the ball with her right hand (she's left-handed). She then jumped triumphantly up and down as did her teammates, who mobbed her.

Prior Lake senior shortstop Libby Bingham paid tribute to Langbehn when she said, "You rarely get one catch like that in lifetime and to get two ... hats off to her. That's clutch and that's what you need to win (a championship.)."

How good were the two catches?

Both were featured on ESPN's Top Plays segment on SportsCenter.

Taylore Fuller was a MaxPreps All-American in high school, and now leads Florida into the WCWS.

Taylore Fuller may not start every game for the University of Florida softball team, but she is certainly a vital part of the squad.

Fuller, a 2012 MaxPreps All-American catcher at Chiefland (Fla.), hit an astonishing .778 with 14 home runs in her senior season.

Just a freshman, she is having an impact on the field for the Gators this season, appearing in 53 games including 39 starts.

But it's clear from today's pregame theatrics that she's already carved out a role as an emotional leader of the team.

Watch below as Fuller attempts to pump up her squad before the No. 2-ranked Gators' Women's College World Series opener against Tennessee.

  • A way to pass the time due to an early arrival at a playoff game ended up becoming an early exit from the Southern Section playoffs in California.

As reported by the Desert Sun, Shadow Hills (Indio, Calif.) traveled to Mary Star of the Sea (San Pedro, Calif.) for a second-round Division 6 playoff contest and players passed the time by doing some hitting. That violates a section rule, and it led to Shadow Hills having to forfeit a game it won 1-0 on the field, in extra innings.

Players left the game excited for a third-round game, and practiced Wednesday at school. Then they started seeing tweets.

They found out their season was unexpectedly over via the Desert Sun's Twitter account.

"We found out about 5 p.m.,” senior Dalilah Castillo-Herrera told the newspaper. “We thought we were playing Friday. We were all so shocked. There’s no words to describe how sad and upset we all are.

"We went to practice, then some girls left to go to an awards ceremony. We were waiting for rides and some girls started getting some things on Twitter. No one knew. It’s sad. We didn’t want to go out this way.”

The story reports that players noticed adults taking cellphone video of them before the contest.

“We were hitting soft toss, having three girls at a time go up and swing five times. Some were out in the field catching. We were just killing time,” said Caitlyn Whiteside.

Bylaw 2521.2 says that "Teams entered in the softball playoffs will not be permitted to take batting practice on the day of a playoff game prior to the commencement of the contest," and that "Includes bunting or slap hitting. Batting practice will be construed as any type of pitching motion with ANY type of ball from in front of the batter (including pitching machines, underhand tossing, overhand throwing or pepper)."
  • Nobody has found a way to stop the Greenwood (Bowling Green, Ky.) softball team on its way into the Kentucky High School Athletic Association record books.

    Raley Slone, Greenwood

According to the Bowling Green Daily News, the Gators' 1-0 triumph over Christian County on Tuesday was the 31st in a row, breaking the mark of 30 set by Reidland in 2000.

They added to the legacy with a 5-2 victory over Central Hardin on Thursday. That extended the record to 32, and the Gators have two more shots Saturday to add to it, as they have scheduled games against Daviess County and Oldham County.

In the record-setting win, Raley Slone knocked in the only run with a third-inning single and Brittany Graham threw a two-hitter for the Gators, who are ranked No. 16 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Softball Rankings and 56th nationally in the Freeman Rankings.

Hailey Szpila set a state record by hitting home runs in five consecutive at-bats.

Maturing power hitter Hailey Szpila of Bullitt Central (Shepherdsville, Ky.) set an all-time Kentucky softball record during the past week by slamming home runs in five consecutive at-bats. There was one walk during the streak.

Coach Buddy Gallemore told MaxPreps that she hit a solo shot on her last Tuesday at-bat against Elizabethtown (Ky.), then exploded for three (two with the bases loaded) during a 15-1 rout of Spencer County (Taylorsville, Ky.) on Wednesday and collected her final round-tripper on Thursday against South Odlham (Crestwood, Ky.).

The previous Kentucky record was three.

The 5-foot-6 junior first baseman/pitcher was finally retired Thursday on a fly ball to left field.

"It was kind of a groan from our fans, but things like that have to come to an end," Gallemore said.

"You don't expect anybody to set a record like that," he continued. "To hit five in five consecutive at-bats is incredible. Her teammates were as excited as she was and so was the coaching staff, believe me. She's worked hard on her swing the last few years. She is just seeing the ball. It looks like a beachball. Her mechanics are very sound and the ball travels. She knows she can hit and her confidence is through the roof."

The left-handed slugger, who has started since eighth grade, bats third in the lineup and is normally a first baseman. However, she has been pressed into pitching this year out of necessity and has compiled a 14-4 record with 56 strikeouts, just eight walks and a 2.47 ERA.

She had only three home runs prior to last week and Gallemore believes she hit just one as a sophomore. This season she is batting .476 with eight home runs, 26 runs and has driven in 27. She has drawn 19 walks and struck out just seven times.

*In a marathon baseball game, Christian Brothers (Memphis, Tenn.) outlasted Memphis University (Memphis, Tenn) 3-2 in a 17-inning thriller which lasted four hours and 35 minutes. No. 9 hitter Brandon Dawson was the hero with the winning RBI single following a triple by Chris Carrier.
