More flips, twists and news from football recruiting world

There are flips and then there are somersaults.

The one in North Carolina Thursday qualifies as the latter.

According to the News & Observer, Page (Greensboro, N.C.) quarterback James Summers switched his college choice from North Carolina State to North Carolina.

The 6-3, 205-pounder is a big difference-maker. He threw for 1,506 yards and 20 touchdowns and rushed for 1,632 more and 22 scores, leading Page to a 15-0 record.

Summers' flip led a big day of recruiting news throughout the country. National Signing Day is Wednesday. Other items:

* In Oklahoma, the flip was reversed. The state school ended up on top.

The Oklahoman reports that Wagoner (Okla.) highly touted cornerback Kevin Peterson has switched from Oklahoma to Oklahoma State. He told the newspaper that when Oklahoma defensive backs coach Willie Martinez and defensive coordinator Brent Venables left, he had second thoughts.

Peterson was the Oklahoman state Defensive Player of the Year.

* Minnesota's No. 1 recruit, Hopkins (Minnetonka) wide receiver Andre McDonald will join fellow Minnesota stars, Mankato West quarterback Philip Nelson and Waconia tight end Maxx Williams at the University of Minnesota next fall. The 6-3, 200-pound receiver hauled in passes for 1,253 yards and 17 touchdowns. McDonald had considered Vanderbilt and UCLA. Nelson, Williams and McDonald met up at the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl in Phoenix earlier this month. 

* The Washington Post is reporting that Centreville (Clifton, Va.) defensive end Ken Ekanem has cancelled his trip to Notre Dame and will likely pick Virginia Tech. Ekanem had 18 sacks and 72 tackles as a senior.
