There has been a lot of preps news coming out of upstate New York recently, and add two other milestones to the list.
Holley (N.Y.) wrestler Quinton Murphy set a state record with his 276th career victory, this one coming at 138 pounds at the Niagara Frontier Wrestling Officials Association meet. He did it in fine fashion, too, with an 18-2 technical fall in the championship match.
According to
The Daily News, all of his wins at the event came by either technical fall or pin. For his efforts, Holley was selected the most outstanding wrestler of the tournament. He will wrestle in college at Indiana.
Murphy entered the current season with 244 wins (against 12 losses) and now stands 276-12. In his fifth year with the Hawks varsity, Murphy won state as an eighth-grader at 103 pounds, at 125 as a sophomore and 135 as a junior. He finished runner-up as a freshman at 119.
In addition,
Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse, N.Y.) boys basketball coach Buddy Wleklinski won his 400th career game with a 53-21 victory against Chittenango on Friday. Wleklinski is in his 28th year at his alma mater.
Only last week,
two upstate basketball players both eclipsed the 2,000 career point mark on the same night.
