Game Summary
New York High School Basketball - Regina can't hold off Mt. Vernon

(January 7, 2008: Hartsdale, NY 10530) Mt. Vernon Knights (Mt. Vernon, NY) followers exited the stadium thrilled Monday as they saw their basketball team get by the host Regina Tigers (Hartsdale, NY), 50-49 in a non-league contest.

The Knights now sport a 8-0 record. They play next when they host White Plains for a Section 1 I - A contest on Wednesday, January 9. Mt. Vernon will meet a Tigers team coming off a 45-40 non-league loss to North Rockland (Thiells, NY). The Tigers record now stands at 5-3.

Coming up next, the Tigers meet the St. Barnabas Bears (Bronx, NY) in a Catholic contest, on Tuesday, January 8. Regina will attempt to better on its 8-4 season record. The Bears come into the contest with a 0-1 record after their 65-38 non-league loss to Byram Hills (Armonk, NY).
Scoring Summary
First Quarter Summary:
The first qrtr started out pretty close until MV went on an 8-0 run and expanded the lead. A Maria Regina run at the end of the qrtr cut the lead to 5. MV was led by Kwinnyata Mercer with 11 points. Regina got 8 from Kwogios.
Second Quarter Summary:
MR came out fired up in the 2nd qrtr and gained the momentum. Again Kwogios was a handful for Regina scoring 7 points in the qrtr. Only Miles and Mercer scored in the 2nd qrtr for MV while Duncan was having a difficult time connecting.
Third Quarter Summary:
The third qrtr was much more competitive and MV battled back. Mercer had 5 points hitting a 3. Palmer also hit a 3 during that qrtr. Regina scored 9 points and were led by Catavero with 5.
Fourth Quarter Summary:
The final qrtr was the most exciting of the season for MV. MV jumped all over Regina and established a 7 point lead on a 25 footer by Carece Moore with time running down on the 30 second clock.... Regina stormed back with an 8-0 run and took the lead by one. MV regained the lead and Regina took it back on a stolen in bound pass with 16 seconds remaining in the game. With the score 49-48 and Regina up by 1, the ball was placed in the hands of Mercer for the final shot. However, Mercer lost the ball on the dribble and Duncan picked it up. With Mercer and Duncan double teamed, Cummings was left alone under the basket. Duncan found her there and hit her with a soft pass. Cummings hit the winning basket with 2 seconds remaining... MR set up a play but was unable to convert on a last second shot....
