Game Summary
New York High School Basketball - Mt. Vernon thwarts Yorktown

(January 19, 2008: Yorktown Heights, NY 10598) The Mt. Vernon Knights (Mt. Vernon, NY) basketball felled the host Yorktown Huskers (Yorktown Heights, NY), 80-60 in Saturday's non-league test.

The Knights (13-0) will now prepare for their test against Mamaroneck (Mamaroneck, NY). The Tigers go into the Section 1 I - A test with a 8-4 record. In their last test, Mamaroneck went down by Somers (Lincolndale, NY), 48-43, in a non-league test.

The Huskers now own a 6-10 record. They take the field next when they travel to Briarcliff for a non-league test on Saturday, January 26. Yorktown will clash with a Bears squad coming off a 67-44 league win over Putnam Valley (Putnam Valley, NY). The Bears record now stands at 15-1.
Scoring Summary
First Quarter Summary:
MV started the game without center Shanyce Stewart who was out for her second game due to illness. This was the third game without forward Charlene Cummings due to injury. Reserve forward Desiree DePaula responded with four points and senior forward Ramona Miles scored the team's first 8 points. Kwinnyata Mercer scored 9 in the qrtr. YHS came out fast and strong and got 10 points from Maggie Natell. They actually held a 20-18 lead before MV scored 3 three's to end the 1st qrtr.
Second Quarter Summary:
YHS was excited with their 1st qrtr performance and came out firing. However they were unable to sustain the pressure and the scoring from MV. MV scored 25 points in the second qrtr. Kwinnyata Mercer and Nadia Duncan each scored 7 points. Both were sent to the bench along with Desiree DePaula with two fouls each prior to the end of the qrtr.
Third Quarter Summary:
Ramona Miles left the game with an injury and did not play the second half. She had already scored 11 in the game (career high). MV was now without Center Shanyce Stewart, and Forwards Ramona Miles and Charlene Cummings. Forward Desiree DePaula also picked up her fourth foul in this qrtr. Nadia played the 5 position and came alive in the 3r qrtr scoring 9. Mercer played the 4. MV outscored YHS 16-12. YHS sophomore center Onyx Mintah scored six and dominated the boards.
Fourth Quarter Summary:
YHS outscored MVHS 18-12 in the fourth qrtr. MV played much of the final qrtr with reserves. YHS never gave up and pressed til the very end as six different players scored in the 4th qrtr for the Huskers. 5 Different players scored for MV in this qrtr.
