Game Story

Texas High School Basketball - Strake Jesuit prevails Madison

(February 28, 2009: Houston, TX 77045) Strake Jesuit Crusaders (Houston, TX) backers were in high spirits Saturday as they witnessed their basketball squad thwart the host Madison Marlins (Houston, TX), 69-57 in a non-league bout.

With the win, Strake Jesuit upgrades its record to 34-0 on the season.

Scoring Summary

First Quarter Summary:
In post season play, the Crusaders would face their most daunting opponent yet in the Madison Marlins. Both teams were familiar one another having played earlier in the season. The Crusaders would jump out to an early lead, relying on their defensive play schemes to keep the Marlins at bay.
Second Quarter Summary:
The Marlins made offensive runs in the 2nd quarter outscoring the Crusaders 17-14, only to see the Crusaders answer with big plays and bigger defensive stops.
Third Quarter Summary:
By the start of the 2nd half, the 8,000 plus crowd would see Mason-Griffin start to assert himself and will the Marlins back into the game, breaking the Crusaders' double digit lead. Key plays by Brooks, Frazier and Rogers helped to take the momentum back by the end of the 3rd. Jesuit would build a double digit lead again in the 3rd only to see the Marlins cut it down to 5. At this point, the Crusaders would fall back on their experience and leadership to pull through the run.
Fourth Quarter Summary:
Coach Jones' assignment of Dunbar to guard Mason-Griffin had paid off for 2/3's of the game but he would once again set a defensive scheme to double Tommy and have other Marlins make plays.
This would be a crucial time for the Crusaders with starter Williams having already fouled out, and Frazier with 4 fouls. It was at that point where the Crusaders played a tactical game against the Marlins, who couldn't take advantage of the Crusaders and their defensive adjustment. Defense has been Jesuit's mainstay all season long and one again tonight, this would be the Crusaders' foundation with the game on the line, along with knocking down big free throws to keep the Marlins out of reach as they finished the game strong.
