California High School Soccer - St. Francis overwhelmed by Santa Cruz

(February 9, 2012: Watsonville, CA 95076) In Thursday's league battle, the visiting Santa Cruz Cardinals soccer squad scored a close 6-0 triumph over the St. Francis Sharks.

The Cardinals (8-2) will now prepare for their battle against San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA). The Cougars come into the SCCAL battle with a 3-7 record. In their last battle, San Lorenzo Valley was overwhelmed by Aptos (Aptos, CA), 3-0, in a league battle.

The Sharks (0-13) will now prepare for their battle against Aptos (Aptos, CA). The Mariners come into the SCCAL battle with a 10-3 record. In their last battle, Aptos nudged San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, CA), 3-0, in a league battle.

Scoring Summary

When the Shark's hosted the Cardinals, they showed a greatly improved level of play, completely catching the Cardinals off-guard. During the first half, the Sharks fought hard and kept the ball in Cardinal territory for the majority of the half. Being CSS hopefuls, the Cardinals could really feel the pressure and were clearly scrambling to desperately make something happen. The Shark's new central defender Jane Salady (fresh.) was able to destroy the few attempts on goal that the Cardinals had in the first half. Midfielder Maddy Baretto (soph.) was able to keep the ball moving forward for the Sharks by keeping her confidence high and never backing down to a challenge. As forwards, Alexis Lily and Lulu Alvarez held strong as the first line of offense for the Sharks. The Cardinals were able to cash in on one lucky shot just before the end of the first half, making it 1-0 at the half. In the second half, the Cardinals made some adjustments that the lady Sharks were not ready for.
