The Sickles Gryphons baseball team scored 7 runs and limited the visiting Freedom Patriots to 5 in the Gryphons league victory on Friday.
The Gryphons (8-12) will now prepare for their match against Newsome (Lithia, FL). The Wolves go into the non-league match with a 13-8 record. In their last match, Newsome by Durant (Plant City, FL), 2-0, in a league challenge.
With the defeat, Freedom falls to 10-10 on the season. The Patriots travel to Durant (Plant City, FL) to encounter the Cougars in a non-league challenge on Tuesday, April 19. The Cougars come into the challenge with a record of 13-7. Durant lost 5-1 in their recent non-league challenge against Wharton (Tampa, FL)
Marc Perez pitched another gutzy complete game with this victory over Freedom. The game was looking grim for the Gryphons spotting Freedom to 4 runs in the first inning. But Perez dug deep to keep them from scoring again until the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, the Sickles nine were sparked by a leadoff error and a 7 hit, 7 run explosion ensued. Jordan Douglas started it off with a double then a succession of singles by Alex DeGracia, Brandon Goede, Jack Machonis and Sam Machonis was capped off with a bases clearing double by Hedric Carela, with Sam Machonis scoring the winning run from first base. Mick Kuhn finished it off with an RBI single. With this victory, the Gryphons go to 6-6 and the Patriots go to 5-7 in district play.
