In Saturday's non-league outing, the Independence Blue Devils (Independence, OH) basketball squad beat the host Cardinal Huskies (Middlefield, OH), by a count of 85-74.
The Blue Devils (1-0) will now prepare for their outing against Chagrin Falls (Chagrin Falls, OH). The Tigers go into the non-league outing with a 0-0 record.
The Huskies now hold a 0-1 record. They take the field next when they host Bloomfield for a non-league challenge on Wednesday, December 10.
Blue Devils got off to a pretty good start. Paul Cichocki & Evan Lentz led the way with 8 1st quarter points each. The Blue Devils attacked the basket and the back boards hard to set the tone of the game early.
Cardinal went on a nice run to close a big Blue Devil lead to 42-29, and went into the half carrying some momentum.
A hot shooting 3rd quarter by Cardinal made the ball game even closer as the Blue Devil lead was shortened to 57-47.
A back and forth quarter created an interesting ending tothe game. Cardinal was fouled on a 3 point basket attempt. the 3rd shot was missed intentionally as Cardinal put back the reboundtosend the game to overtime.
The Blue Devilstook over inthe extra time period as a great effort by Paul Cichocki, Evan Lentz, and Mike Cashin pounded the Blue Devils to a 16-7 overtime score. Extra mention to Tony Carsel for controllingtheflow ofthe 4th quarter and overtime, while knocking down several key free throws.
