The Cougars (1-3) will now prepare for their battle against Village Christian Academy (Fayetteville, NC). The Knights come into the non-league battle with a 0-3 record. In their last battle, Village Christian Academy was nudged by Trinity Christian (Fayetteville, NC), 93-34, in a non-league battle.
In a sloppy first half in which southlake shot only 25% and scored a season low 16 points the eagles went in at half only down 10 which was in part due to the incredible inside play of senior Derek Santiago who had 9 blocks in the first half alone and ended with a school record 12 for the game. The first half was a tale of High Point Christian being the aggressor and the young eagles looking timid in the face of the pressure put on by High Point.
After an extremely animated and intense halftime talk the eagles came out in the second half with more intensity and willing to kick back. They took the ball to the rim with much more agressiveness than in the first half and ended up cutting the lead to 5.
In the fouth quarter the eagles were the dominating team building a 5 point lead with under 2 to go. Much of this was done on the hot shooting of Evan Arthur who finished with 33 points. Unfortunately the eagles missed a few free throws to put the game out of reach and a late 3 pointer sent it in to overtime for the second straight home game.
In overtime the roles were reversed with High point building a 5 point lead with under 2 to go but a quick two by Santiago and a bomb by arthur tied it up. High Point scored with 40 seconds left and the eagles came down and burned 30 seconds and Zak Johnston drove to the hole scoring and getting fouled. Iceman Johnston stepped to the line with 9 seconds and hit the foul shot for a 1 point lead. High point then missed a 10 foot jumper at the buzzer.
