In Tuesday's non-league outing, the Kearney Bearcats (Kearney, NE) basketball squad edged the visiting Lexington Minutemen (Lexington, NE), by a count of 46-40.
The Bearcats (8-0) will now prepare for their match against Lincoln Northeast (Lincoln, NE). The Rockets enter the A District TBA match with a 2-5 record. In their last match, Lincoln Northeast was nipped by Lincoln (Lincoln, NE), 77-40, in a league match.
With the defeat, Lexington moves to 2-5 on the year. The Minutemen travel to Columbus (Columbus, NE) to confront the Discoverers in a non-league match on Wednesday, December 29. The Discoverers enter the match with a record of 0-7. Columbus lost 48-34 in their recent non-league match against North Platte (North Platte, NE)
Balance scoring from Lexington saw the Minutemen hold an 11 to 9 edge at the end of the first quarter
Defense was prevalent in the 2nd quarter as neither Lexington or Kearney could add many points on the board. Lexington held an 18 to 15 advantage at halftime.
Kearney's TJ Jacobsen poured in 10 third quarter points and Logan Wurtz hit a three pointer at the buzzer as Kearney took a 30 to 29 lead into the final frame.
Lexington led 37 to 35 with 1:52 left in the game when the Bearcats Tyler Shields nailed a three point shot putting Kearney up 38 to 37. A steal by Kearney's Zach Maloley and a full court drive to the basket by Maloley gave the Bearcats a three point advantage. Lexington was forced to foul and Kearney went on a 11 to 3 run to close out the game
