In Wednesday's league match, the host West Warwick Wizards basketball team scored a tight 85-81 triumph over the North Providence Cougars.
In their next game, the Wizards confront the Shea Raiders (Pawtucket, RI) in a Division II - Central match, on Tuesday, January 24. West Warwick will attempt to better on its 12-1 season record.
With the defeat, North Providence moves to 8-3 on the year. The Cougars travel to Westerly (Westerly, RI) to confront the Bulldogs in a non-league match on Tuesday, January 24. The Bulldogs enter the match with a record of 9-3.
In a much anticipated game between Rhode Island's top two scoring teams, North Providence took a 42-41 lead at intermission.
The Cougars, who relied heavily on perimeter shooting, hit 7 of 21 three point attempts in the first half. Senior Austin Van Bemmemelen led the way with 17 points.
The Wizards, who made 3/10 from three point land, used their inside presence in the first half. Seniors Ryan Lawton (16 points), Cory Thibault (8 points), and Elijah Saintfleur (2 points) kept North Providence from getting any second chance points.
Senior Guard John Morrison added 12 points for the Wizards.
Down 71-62 with 8:44 remaining in the game, the Wizards went on a 23-10 run to upset North Providence, 85-81.
Senior John Morrison, who scored 21 of his game high 33 points in the second half, connected on five three pointers to propel the Wizards (12-1 overall) to their ninth consecutive league win. North Providence, the defending Division II Champions fell to 7-2 in league play.
Besides Morrison's 33 points, Ryan Lawton finished with 23 points (11/15 inside the pain), 7 rebounds, and 7 assists.
