Fans at Tuesday's non-league challenge between the Carmel Rams (Carmel, NY) and the visiting Mt. Vernon Knights (Mt. Vernon, NY), saw Carmel's basketball squad hold off Mt. Vernon by a score of 57-51.
With the victory, Carmel improves its record to 2-0 on the campaign. The Rams travel to Our Lady of Lourdes (Poughkeepsie, NY) to play the Warriors in a non-league challenge on Friday, December 10. The Warriors come into the challenge with a record of 0-0.
Next up, the Knights play the Irvington Bulldogs (Irvington, NY) in a non-league challenge, on Saturday, December 11. Mt. Vernon will attempt to improve on its 0-1 season record.
Carmel junped out to an 11-1 lead. MV came storming back to 11-14 quarter. MV missed their first 8 shots. Lubirdia Gordon broke the ice with MVs first basket with 2:49 min to go in the quarter.
MV tied the game at 14 to begin the quarter. However, Carmel responded with a series of fast break lay ups to expand their lead to 10 at the end of the quarter. Gordon and Moore were the only MV scorers for the quarter. Diaz scored 11 points for Carmel in that quarter.
Carmel again came out strong in the third quarter. MV hung tough but couldn't sustain Carmel's intensity. Carmel went up by 15. Horne scored 11 points in that quarter.
MV came out fighting in the fourth quarter and quick runs brought the score down to 13 and then 11. A couple of runs brought the lead down to 7 before 6'4" center Gordon fouled out. King, Moore and Gordon tried desperately to bring MV all the way back from 18 down in the third quarter. A late 3 by Moore closed the gap to 6 as the time ran out. Carmel managed only 2 FGs in the fourth qrtr but D'Apice was 6 of 8 from the foul line.
