Alleghany Trojans (Sparta, NC) backers were in high spirits Tuesday as they witnessed their basketball squad tip the visiting North Wilkes Vikings (Hays, NC), 31-30 in a league bout.
With the win, Alleghany upgrades its record to 10-2 on the season. The Trojans host Elkin (Elkin, NC) to play the Elks in a bout on Thursday, January 26. The Elks go into the bout with a record of 0-7.
Next up, the Vikings play the Elkin Elks (Elkin, NC) in a bout, on Tuesday, January 31. North Wilkes will attempt to upgrade on its 13-4 season record. The Elks go into the bout with a 0-8 record after their 43-25 league loss to Alleghany (Sparta, NC).
The Lady Trojans had a rough start in the first quarter against the number 1 seeded North Wilkes with Courtney Binder getting the only 2 points of the quarter. The Trojans struggled on both the offense and defensive ends. The Lady Trojans had not seen game action in over a week do to Starmount and Ashe County not having JV programs.
In the second quarter the Lady Trojans gained very little momentum but did seem to begin attacking the basket better. Abby Hawks scored 1 bucket, while Macy Davis hit 2 of 6 free throws but then knocked down a 3 at the end of the quarter to bring the game within 10 points at the half.
The Lady Trojan came out ready to make a come in the third quarter and outscored the North Wilkes Vikings 15 to 5 in the third. An outstanding defensive effort from all players accompanied with Jo Ruiz and Hannah Billings chipping in 1 bucket apiece, Abby Hawks driving the lane to contribute 6 points and 1 free throw, while Courtney Binder finished plays inside with 4 points brought the Lady Trojans back in the game and ended the third quarter with a tie game.
The fourth quarter was a offensive effort made mostly on the line from both teams. North Wilkes went 6 for 16 from the line and didn't score any baskets other than free throws while the Lady Trojans went 5 for 10 from the line with Jo Ruiz scoring the only live action bucket of the 4th. Exceptional defense from Abby Hawks, Lucy LeMasters, Jo Ruiz, Courtney Binder and Macy Davis led the Trojans to a 31-30 win over the Vikings and put the Trojans in a tie for 1st place in the conference.
