The Southfield Christian Eagles tipped the visiting Parkway Christian basketball team by a final score of 45-43 in Tuesday's league game.
In their next game, the Eagles face the Star International Academy Falcons (Dearborn Heights, MI) in a non-league game, on Thursday, January 18. Southfield Christian will attempt to move on its 1-1 season record.
With the defeat, Parkway Christian moves to 3-5 on the year. The travel to Lutheran Northwest (Rochester Hills, MI) to face the Crusaders in a game on Friday, January 19. The Crusaders enter the game with a record of 1-0.
Southfield came out of the gate strong and the Eagles looked outmatched.
The Eagles defense started to gain some footing in their half court trap and 2-3 zone. They chipped away at SC's lead keeping it close and cutting it to 7 by halftime. Austin Hosmer scored 8, including two threes to pace the scoring for Parkway.
After trading a few baskets to open the third, the Eagles stormed back. Tayshaun Peterson led the charge, scoring 9 of his 14 in the third quarter. Tayshaun, Jung Shim, and Austin Hosmer caused havoc in the half court trap and the Eagles were able to take a one point lead 33-32, forcing SC to stop the bleeding with a timeout. Parkway was able to maintain their 1 point lead going into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was back and forth. Every time one team made a big shot, there was an answer. Austin Hosmer hit two more threes to lead Parkway, who found themselves up one with 50 seconds to go 43-42 after a John Stricker jumper. With 30 seconds remaining in the game Tayshaun Peterson's shot missed the mark giving Southfield one last opportunity. SC found a small opening from the corner for three-points. Stricker contested the shot well, but the shot rattled in with 20 seconds remaining and Parkway's final shot also missed the mark.
