Spectators at Wednesday's league match between the Soddy Daisy Trojans (Soddy Daisy, TN) and the host McMinn County Cherokees (Athens, TN), witnessed Soddy Daisy's softball squad tip McMinn County by a count of 3-2.
The Trojans now sport a 20-2 record. They play next when they host Ooltewah for a AAA District 5 match on Thursday, April 12. Soddy Daisy will face a Owls squad coming off a 5-4 non-league loss to Hixson (Hixson, TN). The Owls record now stands at 14-6.
With the loss, McMinn County moves to 11-9 on the season. The Cherokees host Cleveland (Cleveland, TN) to face the Blue Raiders in a AAA District 5 match on Thursday, April 12. The Blue Raiders go into the match with a record of 0-6.
The bottom of the first saw the Lady Cherokees take an early lead, 2-0. A double by Madison Quirk, plating Kourtney Yarber and Rachel Lillard started the inning off.
Soddy Daisy pushed one run across in the 3rd and 6th innings to even the score. Both teams went scoreless until the 10th inning which is when the international tie breaker goes into effect. Soddy-Daisy's last out was placed on second, steals 3rd base and scores on a ground ball hit to the short stop. They next have a runner called out for leaving early and the next 2 batters are retired.
In the bottom of the 10th with Destiny Watson at second due to the international tie breaker, the Lady Cherokees just couldn't manufacture the run needed to continue the game, losing 3-2.
Jordan Harris, for the Lady Cherokees pitched all 10 innings giving up 8 hits, walking 2 and striking out 7. Rachel Lillard, Kourtney Yarber all singled. Madison Quirk goes 2 for 3 with a double and racks up 2 RBIs.
