It could not have been scripted any better as the nationally-ranked Bishop O'Connell girls opened the 2017 campaign with a dominating performance against St. John's in WCAC play, run-ruling the visiting Cadets, 16-0.
Pre-season All-American Kathryn Sandercock was just that, perfect. Perfect as in facing 15 batters and retiring 15 batters, 11 via strikeouts and the other four on groundouts to second base. Besides hurling a perfect game, the hard-throwing junior was also a picture of perfection at the plate -- going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a two-run triple and a solo home run blast to left-center.
Her batterymate, freshman catcher Meadow Sacadura, also had a nice game -- calling the game and doing a nice job handling her pitcher besides going 2-for-3 in the batter's box including a three-run home run to left.
Elizabeth Hoeymans, Leah Hammes and Kayla Turner also had multi-hit games in igniting a 16-hit O'Connell attack. Hoeymans went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.
