Avon Braves (Avon, NY) fans exited the stadium thrilled Monday as they saw their softball squad nip the visiting Canisteo-Greenwood Redskins (Canisteo, NY), 7-2 in a non-league challenge.
The Braves now sport a 14-4 record. They take the field next when they host North Rose-Wolcott for a non-league challenge on Wednesday, May 23. Avon will face a Cougars squad coming off a 23-8 league win over Marion (Marion, NY). The Cougars record now stands at 10-6.
With the loss, Canisteo-Greenwood falls to 0-1 on the campaign.
Canisteo-Greenwood scored in the top of the first to take the early lead. Avon tied the game in the third on a two out double by Keni Read. The Braves took the lead in the fourth as Maddy Smith started the rally with a one out single and Katrina Yencer and Marisa Rumfola delivered rbi hits. After Canisteo added a run in the top of the fifth to close within 3-2, the Braves responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Joleigh Crye led off with a triple and scored on a single by Read. Read later scored on a fielder's choice by Jessica Rozanski. Avon scored two insurance runs in the sixth as Abby Decillis delivered a two out rbi single. Sophomore Alyssa Betron pitched five innings for the victory allowing only three hits while striking out nine and walking no one. She allowed only one earned run. Eighth grader Joleigh Crye got the last six outs for the save, striking out four.
