Congratulations to Mitchell Lopez for being selected as the Varsity Football Player of the Year. In Mercy's inaugural season in 8-man football, Mitch earns this honor for his relentless and determined play from both his quarterback and middle linebacker positions.
At Quarterback, Mitch was 23 of 39 passing, a 59% completion percentage, for 553 yards, 5 TD's and a quarterback rating 122.0%.
As a ball carrier though, Mitchell was at his best. He carried the ball 129 times for 1308 plus yards, a 10.14 yards per carry average, a 218 yards per game average, 16 TD's and a 83 yard run as his longest of the year in the final regular season game against Happy Camp.
He accounted for 110 plus total points scored, 21 total touchdowns, 14 two-point conversions and a 18.3 points per game average for the year.
Mitch also had 3 punts on the year for 160 yards, with a long of 55 yards and a average of 53.33 per punt.
On defense, Mitch was a tenacious hitter from his middle linebacker position accounting for 31 solo tackles, 15 assits for a total of 54 tackles and a 9.0 average tackle per game for the season.
Mitchell's unwillingness to ever give up on any play and "video game" style cut-backs, spins, hops, stutter steps and stomp moves electrified the crowds and motivated his teammates to a playoff berth in their first year in the 8-man North Football League after the schools 1 year hiatus from football.
Look for Mitch and his teammates to give the other teams headaches is the post season starting next Friday night in Westwood. View Previous Selections
