  • EAST 19 - Grove City 22 2OT |Posted on: 9/20/2009
East headed into enemy territory for the first time this year as they took on the Grove City Eagles in the southernmost part of Region 6. In what many hailed as an instant classic, the Warriors battled back from a 13-0 deficit in the second half to tie the game with 2:26 left to play. After facing down a late Grove City drive and missed field goal with a 1:01 left on the clock, the Warriors ran out the clock and moved to OT. East won the overtime coin toss and elected to go on defense first. In PA high school football, the overtime format is similar to that of NCAA football. Each team has four downs from the ten yard line to either score a touchdown or kick a field goal. By taking the ball last, the Warriors claimed the advantage of knowing what kind of score they would need to either win or re-tie the game. In the first overtime Grove City scored on a one yard run to go up 19-13. East got a huge break on the PAT attempt when Eagles kicker Josh Hershberger bounced his kick off the left upright, leaving the door open for a Warrior victory. All East had to do was score a touchdown and kick the extra point. On the first play of their first overtime opportunity, quarterback Gary Brown, who had earlier scored on an amazing 81 yard quarterback sneak and had a 14 yard touchdown to James Paul, again connected with Paul to knot the score at 19. Max Sanchez took the field to kick the extra point, but his attempt went wide right and the teams headed to a second overtime. Because they had the advantage in the first overtime, the Warriors, by rule, were obligated to take the first possession of the second overtime. East picked up six tough yards on first down to set up second and goal from the four. Gary Brown called his own number and darted quickly through an opening to his right. Just as it appeared he would take it in for the score, the hole closed around him and he struggled to make it into the endzone. The play side Side Judge ran in to mark the spot. The Umpire and Referee converged to set the spot and start the play clock. Suddenly there was some discussion amongst the officials. Grove City players were jumping up and down and pointing as though they had recovered a fumble. But there had been no fumble... or so East believed. WARRIORS VS. EAGLES SEPTEMBER 11, 2009 VIDEO TO COME... Despite sending the offensive and defensive teams back to their huddles where all assumed East would have 3rd and Goal from about the one-foot line, the officials continued to confer with one another, eventually calling in the remaining official, the side judge away from play side, whose view had to have been obstructed by the linemen and the flow of play. His view didn’t seem to matter. Mere seconds after conferring with the only official who couldn’t have seen the play, the officials suddenly blew the ball dead, and awarded possession to the Eagles. The game, for all intents and purposes was ended. Grove City ran three plays up the middle and, on fourth and goal from the five, kicked a 22-yard field goal to claim a dubious 22-19 victory in double overtime. In the hours and days after the game, many noted to the Warrior coaching staff the desire, heart, courage, and discipline East displayed in the loss. And they’re right---our team showed immense character in many ways--never giving up, battling to come from behind late in the game, and in staying poised in overtime. But a team should only have to face one opponent at a time on the field of play, and, frankly, in Grove City last Friday, the Warriors seemed to have two teams against them all night--and in spite of it they still almost came out ahead with the victory. Way to go Warriors!!

  • Erie East High Warriors victory against Franklin Knights|Posted on: 9/9/2009
For a team that's won a mere 3 games in five years, the East High Warriors (Erie, PA) had surprisingly high expectations coming into the 2009 season. "We as a coaching staff didn't sit down and put a number down," second-year coach Leonard Ford explained, talking about wins. "But what we did do was commit to preparing a team that would be mentally, physically, and intellectually athletic." If Friday night's result is any indication, Coach Ford and his staff have been largely successful. The Warriors opened the season at home last Friday, facing a Franklin team that had beaten them 35-28 a year ago. For a moment, it looked like nothing had changed at East High. On the first play from scrimmage, Franklin's quarterback threw a lateral deep into the backfield to his right, and a moment later the Knights were celebrating a 54 yard halfback pass that put them up 6-0 after one play. They then converted on an impressive, bobbling catch in the back of the end zone to take an 8-0 lead. "That would have broken us," Coach Ford said. "In years past, a play like that would have taken the wind out of our sails and our kids would have been done." This year, however, the Warriors of East High, led by a staggering 24 seniors, seemed to take it all in stride. Staying focused, the Warriors struggled a bit on the next offensive and defensive series before catching fire mid-way through the first quarter. In the first of his three touchdowns (all in the first half) Alondre Hamilton took a Gary Brown pitch out to the left and raced 54 yards untouched to bring the Warriors to within two. A motion penalty and a delay of game penalty on successive conversion attempts pushed the ball to the 13, but Gary Brown connected with Martial Cajuste in the end zone to knot the score at 8. And just like that, the floodgates opened. East rolled off 38 unanswered points after tying the game, getting two more long touchdowns from Hamilton, two scores from Deairus Nolen, and a touchdown each from Jermaine Thornton and James Paul. Max Sanchez booted two PATs to round out the scoring. Defensive leaders included Dejon Sheppard, Levonte Ford, and Ben Clanton, each with a solo sack, Jacob Wood, Damian Jefferson, and Peter Hamilton with multiple tackles for loss, and Deairus Nolen with a fumble recovery.
