First Quarter
A night when the West Potomac Lady Wolverines were primed to start challenging the upper tier of the Patriot Conference fell short Friday night against the Lake Braddock Lady Bruins at West Potomac High School. The disappointment could be felt all over the Mary Fiedor Memorial Gymnasium affectionately known as "the Wolverdome" from coaches, players and wolverine fans. Coming into the game riding a four game winning streak the Lady Wolverines looked sluggish and lacked energy as turnovers along with easy shots became a major problem as the game progressed. "The Big Ticket", junior power forward Natalie Terwilliger started her scoring night with a quick 3 pointer and a basket and all seemed well in wolverine world. "The Chairman of the Boards", senior post player Haleigh Hopper added a pretty post basket and a made free throw by Ty Taylor completed the scoring for the quarter. The two high scorers for the Lady Bruins was Bailey Edwards with a 3 pointer and Kathryn Esper with 4 points.
Second Quarter
Senior point guard, "Stone Cold"Ty Taylor for the Lady Wolverines had been on a scoring tear over her past three games. Scoring 16, 13, and 13 points respectively but after two quarters tonight only had scored that lone free throw. To fast forward through the complete game Taylor only scored one basket and went 1 for 6 at the free throw line for a grand total of 3 points! This was her lowest score showing the entire season. Taylor wasn't the only Lady Wolverine with shooting woes. Senior shooting guard, Grace "G-Money" Moery over her past two games had scored 15 and 20 points respectively. Tonight Moery went 1 for 4 from the throw line and this one point was her grand total for the entire night. She had countless open 3 point shots and they either fell short of the rim or hit the rim while bouncing away. Seven of these shots felled their mark. For the second quarter the Lady Wolverines went 1 for 5 (20%) from line and 45% for the night. The Bruins led by 5 after 2 quarters.
Third Quarter
One would have thought that a pattern was beginning to form with each quarter's ending. The Lady Bruins led by 3 points after the first quarter, 5 points after the second quarter and naturally one might think after three quarters the lead would be 7 points for the Lady Bruins but it ended only with a six point lead. The third quarter seen Terwilliger score 5 points which by the way was more than half her team's total point output of 9 points. The only guard who scored in the third quarter for the Lady Wolverines was senior guard and team captain Martha Gallagher with two free throws. Zero points from Taylor, Moery and sophmore guard Lauren Ellis. The remaining two points from the quarter came from Hopper who scored on a bank shot. Alaina Park led the Lady Bruins third quarter scoring with 5 points, with help from Esper who connected on a 3 pointer and Elsa Taylor who chipped in with a basket.
Fourth Quarter
The comeback quarter found the most consistent scorer for the Lady Wolverines Terwilliger scoring zero points in the fourth quarter and fouling out. Down the stretch of a tightly played contest foul shooting usually will play a pivotal role in the outcome. Tonight was no difference as the Lady Bruins Park shot 6 for 6 from the free throw line, Esper went 4 for 4 from the same line and Taylor 1 for 2. When I last checked my math 11 for 12 is 91.6%!!! In comparison the Lady Wolverines went 5 for 8 from the line or 62.5%. The three misses for the Lady Wolverines was by Taylor while Moery was being held scoreless for the quarter. Both teams are now 7-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Next up for the Lady Bruins is a Tuesday night home game against the Annandale Lady Atoms (3-8, 1-3) and for the Lady Wolverines an away game against their crosstown rivalry the Mount Vernon Lady Majors (2-9, 1-3) also on Tuesday evening. This rivalry is about "bragging rights" and nothing more matters!
