California High School Basketball - Woodrow Wilson topped by Millikan
January 13, 2012: Long Beach, CA 90804 The Millikan Rams basketball team scored 73 points and restricted the host Woodrow Wilson Bruins to 60 in the Rams league victory on Friday.
The Rams now sport a 11-5 record. They play next when they travel to Lakewood for a Moore contest on Wednesday, January 18. Millikan will meet a Lancers team coming off a 66-18 league loss to Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, CA). The Lancers record now stands at 7-8.
The Bruins (9-8) will now prepare for their contest against Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, CA). The Jackrabbits come into the Moore contest with a 15-1 record. In their last contest, Long Beach Poly beat Lakewood (Lakewood, CA), 66-18, in a league contest.
First Quarter
The Bruins came out with an aggressive 1-3-1 zone trap that bothered Millikan enough to allow the Bruins to hang around and trail at the end of the quarter 19-18. Each Bruins that played was involved in the scoring with Andee Flores and Michaela Reed leading the way with 5pts each.
Second Quarter
The Bruins found themselves in early foul trouble with Joi Bertrand picking up her 2nd foul in the 1st quarter and her 3rd in the 2nd quarter. Still with Shelvena Turner scoring 7 of her team high 18pts in the quarter and Janelle Porter adding 4pts the Bruins trailed 35-32 at the half.
Third Quarter
In the third quarter Millikan started to slowly gain contol of the flow of the game as J. Bertrand and Kamika Mason were saddled with 4 fouls each. Still Shelvena Turner would not let her team go slowly into the night. She scored 6pts as she tried to singlehandily keep the Bruins in the game. End of quarter score was 52-46 Millikan.
Fourth Quarter
With the Bigs in foul trouble and on the bench Millikans Basha Brulee-Wills took over the game scoring 11 of her game high 26pts. And with Shelvena now in foul trouble and on the bench the Bruins had no offensive punch or defensive answers. Michaela Reed scored 7pts but it was not enough to stop Millikan from winning 73-60. M. Reed finished with another double-double 15pts/11rbs. Shelvena Turner finished with team highs 18pts, 4ast, and 6stls in what has to be her best game as a Bruin. The Bruins resume play next week at home against LB Poly.
