Florida High School Baseball - Matanzas loses to Ponte Vedra
March 7, 2012: Palm Coast, FL 32137 The Ponte Vedra Sharks baseball team scored 9 runs and limited the host Matanzas Pirates to 0 in the Sharks league victory on Wednesday.
The Sharks (7-3) will now prepare for their match against Lowndes (Valdosta, GA). The Vikings go into the non-league match with a 0-4 record.
The Pirates (4-5) will now prepare for their match against Menendez (St. Augustine, FL). The Falcons go into the 5A District 4 match with a 5-5 record.
Game Summary
Ponte Vedra played a near perfect game to defeat Matanzas for the second straight night in a district 5A contest. The 9-0 victory was the second straight shutoutt posted by the Sharks pitching staff in as many nights over the host Pirates.
Junior southpaw Byron Yelverton allowed but two hits and struck out seven in five innings of work to pick up the win. Juniors Matt Deegan and Walker Sheller each pitched a scoreless inning to preserve the victory. Matanzas was only able to collect three hits, two by centerfielder Tyler Walls and struct out 12 times against Shark pitchers.
The Sharks played errorless ball in field in winning their seventh game in 10 outings while offensively they banged out a season high 13 hits. Less than two weeks after completing his work as the point guard on the varsity basketball team, sophomore Jackson Johnson banged out three hits in his second varsity start. Perry Orth, Brett Poling, Nate Rokos, and Alex Willich each had two hits for the Sharks
