Second Quarter
Game Recap: On one of the few non-rainy stretch of house in the past 5 days, the City Black Knights traveled a short ways up the road to Mervo high school in the early evening to play the Douglass Ducks in a rematch of last year’s Class 2A North first-round playoff game which was won by City 46 – 20. For today’s game, City co-captains Da’Quan Smith and Tyreke Richburg won the coin toss. City elected to receive the ball, and they moved it into Douglass territory, but City’s drive stalled, and so City’s Cameron Drummond punted to the Douglass 25 yard line where a hit by City’s Tyrin Tyson caused the Douglass player to fumble and the ball was recovered by City’s Charles Tapper. A short while later, City tailback D. Smith used a good stiff arm to sweep into the endzone from 8 yards out, and City QB Steffen Wilkens ran in the 2 point conversion to put City up 8 – 0. After the kickoff, Douglass gained one first down, but then fumbled the ball and it was recovered by City’s Shawn Evins at the
Fourth Quarter
With City junior Troy Robinson playing QB in the 2nd Half it was more of the same, as T. Robinson threw a TD pass on 4th down to T. Richburg early in the 3rd Qtr (T. Mayo ran in the 2 pt conversion), D. Smith scored his second TD of the day on a 12 yard run (the conversion run failed), and Robinson threw a 58 yard TD on a catch & run by City WR Deion Petty (Shawn Thorpe ran in the 2 pt conversion run) which gave City a 40 – 0 lead with 7:00 left in the game. Interestingly, both of Robinson’s TD passes came on 4th down & >10 yards; had those completions not occurred, the score would have been closer than the final 40 – 0 margin of victory for City.
