North Carolina High School Basketball - Alleghany tops Elkin
January 26, 2017: Sparta, NC 28675 Alleghany Trojans (Sparta, NC) backers were pleased Thursday as they saw their basketball squad knock off the visiting Elkin Elks (Elkin, NC), 43-25 in a league bout.
With the victory, Alleghany upgrades its record to 11-2 on the campaign. The Trojans travel to Wilkes Central (Wilkesboro, NC) to play the Eagles in a bout on Tuesday, January 31. The Eagles come into the bout with a record of 1-5.
Next up, the Elks play the North Wilkes Vikings (Hays, NC) in a bout, on Tuesday, January 31. Elkin will attempt to upgrade on its 0-8 season record. The Vikings come into the bout with a 13-4 record after their 31-30 league loss to Alleghany (Sparta, NC).
First Quarter
The Lady Trojans got off to a slow start in the first quarter before settling into a rhythm and finishing the quarter 13-0. Hawks had 2 field goals and went 2 for 4 from the line in the first for 6 total points, while Hannah Billings knocked down 3 of 4 at the line, while Courtney Binder and Laney Miller both added 1 bucket each. Lucy LeMasters played her usual great defensive in the first and fellow members of the Trojans followed her defensive lead to keep the Elks at 0 for the first quarter.
Second Quarter
Second quarter action picked up with Luisa Rivas getting a nice offensive board for a put back, Maddie Brown picking up her first basket since returning from an injury, and Macy Davis adding 2 points as well.
Third Quarter
Third Quarter action saw several other Trojans contributing on the offensive and defensive end. Jo Ruiz scored her first points of the game with a bucket and knocking down 2 free throws, Courtney Binder added a great post move adding 2 more to her offensive contribution, while Macy Davis added nice steals on the defensive end and 4 more points. While the Lady Trojans showed a strong defensive effort as a group all night, Hannah Billings, Lucy LeMasters, and Courtney Binder all contained their match-ups well in the 3rd.
Fourth Quarter
The Lady Trojans finished the 4th quarter with a total of 14 points, hard defense, and nice ball movement. Abby Hawks contributed 1 basket and went 2 for 2 from the line, Jo Ruiz added another bucket, Sierra Parks knocked down a short jumper and had 2 rebounds, while Courtney Binder, Madison Trogdon, and Maddie Brown all added 1 bucket a piece for a great collective effort from the Lady Trojans.
