Game Summary
In one of the best softball games that will be played this spring, O'Connell prevailed in extra innings, 1-0, in a pitchers' duel on Saturday afternoon at McLean.
The visiting DJO girls finally pushed across a run in the eighth when Leah Hammes' aggressive baserunning found her sliding into second base with a double. Two batters later, she scored on a sharp single to left by Patty Maye Ohanian -- tip-toeing around the catcher on a throw that skipped away from the McLean defensive player.
That was all ace Kathryn Sandercock needed as she retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth. Once again, she was magnificent in the circle -- hurling a three-hit shutout and striking out 16 in the process while surrendering just one free pass.
Ohanian led the Knights five-hit attack, going 2-for-4 in the box and driving in the game's only run. Kayla Turner and Elizabeth Hoeymans also had base hits.
