First Quarter
Friday night's game at Mount Vernon High School between the West Potomac Lady Wolverines and the Mount Vernon Lady Majors was one for the memory book between two old rival schools. It was nearly a month ago when these two teams played each other at West Potomac High and the Wolverines overcame a 16 point deficit to squeak out a 1 point win in the final 8 seconds. The hero then was senior point guard Tenesha Green who scored the decisive basket and free throw. Drama did not again take the night off. The Majors in the first quarter could have led by more than 4 points but woeful foul shooting hurt that effort. The Majors only made 1 of 7 free throws. The Solomon sisters scored two thirds of the 9 points. Sophomore guard Nori Solomon had 4 and her sister senior guard Elisa had 2.
Second Quarter
Lady Majors Head Coach India Thomas must have wondered who put a spell on her team that would cause them to have ony 1 player score all the points in the second quarter. Senior center Barbara Smith scored all 6 points for the quarter even though a total of 6 other teammates played during the quarter. Meanwhile, Wolverine seniors Bre Elphage, Jessica Dorn and Arielle Boykin along with junior shooting guard Grace Moery made a run before the half. The quartet notched 10 points between them to tie the score at the half 15-15.
Third Quarter
Wolverine Head Coach Lauren Arthur-Compton over the past games has become one of the better halftime adjustment coaches. Tonight this was on display during the third quarter. She instructed her team "to stay low" against the fast penetrating guards of the Lady Majors and the strategy appeared to have worked for the Majors could only score 4 points for the quarter. The Lady Wolverines on the other hand unleashed the fury of their senior backcourt. Starting with Green who scored on a college line 3 pointer over both of the Solomon sisters. Then within minutes at mid-court stole the ball from E. Solomon and throwing the perfect pass to a streaking Elphage who scored on a lay up. Green was not finished as she slipped away from her defender and dropped a soft jumper from the corner for another 2 points. Green a Marymount University Saints recruit and now a commit, showed why she is a top 10 assist leader in the DMV. Lobbing a perfect pass to junior center Haleigh Hopper for 2.
Fourth Quarter
Going into the final quarter with a 10 point lead was something new for the Wolverines who previously had to fight for a lead in order to win games. Green & Elphage knowing and sensing this determined they were not going to let the Majors offense get loose. First Elphage found shooting guard "G-Money" Grace Moery for a spot up 3 pointer. Then in the same exact spot Green found Moery again for a 3 pointer and suddenly the lead was at 16. After a timeout Majors Coach Thomas made a move that spelled trouble for the Wolverines. Fullcourt pressure trapping with instructions to keep the ball out of Green's hand and force someone else to beat them. Senior point guard Chanise Ray who had scored all but 1 point for 3 quarters got hot. She scored 11 points in a 3 minute span while Elisa Solomon chipped in 6 more points along with senior center Barbara Smith's 2 free throws. At end of 4 quarters the score was all knotted up at 38-38.
