Joseph Powell has been named player of the year. "Joseph Powell, 3-year varsity player and 2-year captain, was awarded the 2014 Optimo Award as the Piedmont High School varsity Player of the Year. The Optimo Award for men's basketball is the oldest perpetual award at Piedmont High School, having been established in 1922. The Optimo is awarded to the varsity player who best exemplifies the qualities of "scholarship, citizenship and sportsmanship". Joseph truly epitomizes these qualities. In addition to his outstanding basketball skills, Joseph established himself as a true leader of a rather young team this year, consistently working harder than anyone every day, keeping his focus on the team first, and occasionally leading weightlifting sessions. Joseph has set a high bar for next year's leaders to attain, and having his name etched onto the Optimo in perpetuity is nothing short of wonderful. A great young man, Joseph earned this award by being a terrific team player and captain. "
