Delaware High School Basketball - St. Elizabeth thwarts Smyrna
January 10, 2012: Smyrna, DE The St. Elizabeth Vikings (Wilmington, DE) basketball felled the host Smyrna Eagles (Smyrna, DE), 64-49 in Tuesday's non-league test.
The Vikings (7-3) will now prepare for their test against Salesianum (Wilmington, DE). The Sallies go into the Freelance test with a 3-4 record. In their last test, Salesianum went down by Sanford (Hockessin, DE), 65-42, in a non-league test.
The Eagles now own a 7-3 record. They take the field next when they host Milford for a Henlopen - Northern test on Friday, January 13. Smyrna will clash with a Buccaneers squad coming off a 66-47 non-league loss to Seaford (Seaford, DE). The Buccaneers record now stands at 6-5.
First Quarter
Jr. Guard Andre Patton scored 8 points in the first quarter to overcome an early rush by the Smyrna Eagles that gave them a 10 point 1st quarter lead before the Vikings came back to cut it to 2.
Second Quarter
Patton continued his healthy scoring with 8 points and his cocaptain picked up the load by scoring 9 points to keep the game close with a quarter in which the lead kept changing until finally Smyrnal took a 1 point lead into the locker room.
Third Quarter
Patton continued his scoring binge by 9 points to his game high 26 while leading the Vikings offense. He was joined by Sr. Matt Kisielewski who added 6 points and 6 rebounds in the quarter to help the Vikings defense stave off Andre Gibbs of Smyrna. St. E's defense held the Eagles to just 9 points and seized a 10 point lead at the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Co Captain Sr. Timmy Massado as point guard controlled the entire 4th quarter as he bled the clock and scored 11 of the Vikings 12 points to surge the Vikings to a 17 point bulge before both teams cleared their benches. Andre Patton added 10 rebounds for another double double while Matt Kisielewski had 8 points and 10 rebounds. Older brother Eric Patton chipped in with 9 boards. In addition to Massado's 25 points, he had 5 assists and 5 steals and hit 5 of 7 fouls at the end of the game to lead the Vikings surge. The Vikings win over the 7th ranked team in Delaware at Smyrna opened some eyes in the State.
