New York High School Football - St. Anthony's routs St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute
September 5, 2014: Melville, NY 11747 The St. Anthony's Friars football squad scored 49 points and restricted the visiting St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute Marauders to 16 in the Friars non-league victory on Friday.
The Friars now possess a 1-0 record. They put it on the line next when they travel to Father Judge for a non-league battle on Saturday, September 13. St. Anthony's will play a Crusaders squad coming off a 38-13 non-league win over Northeast (Philadelphia, PA). The Crusaders record now stands at 1-1.
Coming up next, the Marauders play the Clarence Red Devils (Clarence, NY) in a non-league battle, on Saturday, September 13. St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute will attempt to advance on its 0-1 season record. - St Joe's moved the ball with 2 first downs on the first drive of the game. After punt, Boston College bound RB Jordan Gowins took St Anthony's first offensive play 53 yds for a score and would never look back. Two 3/outs by Joe's compounded with a long punt return and a bad snap, St Anthonhy's had 2 short fields ( 16 and 26 yds ) to take a 21-0 lead at the start of 2nd qtr.
- A bright spot was the strong leg of Soph. Louie Surace Jr. His FG from 37 yds into a stiff breeze had plenty to spare. Had a fumble recovery to go along with jumping a route and returned the interception 22 yds to complete the scoring for the Marauders, .
- Sr. Cordell Owens toughed out a nagging injury to lead SJCI with 6 tackles.
