Texas High School Basketball - Chavez nudges Milby
January 25, 2010: Houston, TX 77017 In Monday's league outing, the Chavez Lobos (Houston, TX) basketball squad edged the visiting Milby Buffs (Houston, TX), by a count of 64-59.
The Lobos (12-13) will now prepare for their outing against Bellaire (Bellaire, TX). The Cardinals go into the 5A Region III District 20 outing with a 25-1 record. In their last outing, Bellaire nipped Madison (Houston, TX), 81-54, in a league outing.
The Buffs now hold a 12-13 record. They take the field next when they travel to Westside for a 5A Region III District 20 outing on Friday, January 29. Milby will encounter a Wolves squad coming off a 59-58 league loss to Houston Math Science & Tech (Houston, TX). The Wolves record now stands at 13-12.
First Quarter
The Lobos aggressive play in the 1st quarter gave them an 8-2 lead. Milby quickly called a time out and made the necessary adjustment which help them end the quarter down by two points (14-12)
Second Quarter
The second quarter was very close. It had the feel of a heavy weight boxing match. Both teams refuse to surrender.
Third Quarter
The third quarter Chavez came out with a relentless dare to lose attitude. Milby appeared to be struggling to get into an offensive rhythm In turn the Lobos scored and impressive 19 points to Milby's 7.
Fourth Quarter
Milby came back after a few uncharacteristic turnovers by the Lobos. With only a few seconds left on the clock, both teams kept trading basket. In the closing seconds, Jafus Gaines scored the go ahead basket with seventeen seconds left on the clock. On the inbound pass to Tre Bennet, Trey call a time out (they had used them all up priviously)which caused them to get a technical foul. Jafus scored both points on the technical foul. Then Chavez inbound the ball to Jafus who quickly scored an uncontested layup at the buzzer. Jafus lead all score with 20 points.
