After a sophomore year marred by eligibility issues, Class of 2019 basketball star
Charles Bassey appears headed to
Aspire Academy (Louisville, Ky.).
Adam Zuvanich of the San Antonio Express-News
was the first to report the development, which will see the 6-foot-10 forward/center leave St. Anthony (San Antonio, Texas) for the Bluegrass State.
Bassey is pegged as the No. 3 prospect in the 2019 class by
247Sports.
A native of Nigeria, Bassey and several other St. Anthony players were ruled ineligible last November, prompting the school to leave the governing body it was associated with (TAPPS). It was an up-and-down season for the Yellowjackets and their star playing against a national schedule.
Bassey earned MaxPreps Freshman All-American honors in 2015-16 after posting 20.2 points, 17.1 rebounds and 5.9 blocks per game. He led St. Anthony to a 32-6 record and TAPPS 5A state championship.
Aspire Academy is relocating from Arizona to Kentucky for the upcoming year. Participants in the program attend classes at DeSales (Louisville).
