FORT MYERS, Fla. – University (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) pulled off an upset to become champion of high school basketball's most prestigious regular season tournament Saturday night.

The Sharks knocked off No. 1 Memphis East (Memphis, Tenn.) 77-72 at Florida SouthWestern State College to capture the City of Palms Classic title.

University (9-0) entered ranked No. 18 nationally while Penny Hardaway's Memphis East bunch (11-1) came in harboring national championship hopes. The Florida school was able to foul out Top 10 junior prospect James Wiseman and Wichita State commit Alex Lomax to turn the tide of the game.

The underdog Sharks also became the lowest seed (No. 10) to ever nab the tournament championship.

Vernon Carey Jr., the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2019, scored a game-high 20 points. New Mexico commit Drue Drinnon added 15.

Tournament MVP Scottie Barnes contributed 15 points with eight rebounds. Already regarded as a Top 10 prospect in the Class of 2020, he may have raised the bar even higher after an impressive week in Fort Myers.

Lomax led Memphis East with 20 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

University defeated three Top 15-ranked teams in this year's event. Expect the Sharks to take a major push toward the top of next week's national rankings.
