One of the more intriguing job openings in basketball at any level this offseason is at Chino Hills
in Southern California.
Lonzo and LiAngelo Ball are gone, but younger brother LaMelo
is expected to return along with 6-foot-9 classmate Onyeka Okongwu
Both rising juniors started as freshmen for the school's 35-0 national championship team in 2015-16.Michelle Gardner of the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin reported
Thursday that the school has hired Dennis Latimore to fill the position.
Latimore played collegiately at Arizona and Notre Dame. According to BasketballReference.com
, the 6-9 forward spent 10 games during the 2005-06 season playing professionally for the Demon Astronauts of the Netherlands.
The new Chino Hills head coach has prior experience at View Park (Los Angeles)
, compiling a 23-32 record during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.
Chino Hills is coming off a 30-3 season under Stephen Gilling, who replaced Steve Baik after the school won section, state and national titles two years ago.
Expectations – and not just those of Big Baller Brand CEO LaVar Ball – will be high next season. In addition to the youngest Ball brother (who famously scored 92 points in a game last year) and Okongwu, Phaquan Davis
and Ofure Ujadughele
made major contributions as non-seniors last year.
