The regular season was a success, but the real challenge begins now, in the postseason. This Friday Manteo (8-3) takes on Gates County (6-5) in the first playoff game of the year. Manteo has made scoring difficult for its opponents by holding them to an average of only 10 points per game, a benchmark Gates County will no doubt hope to clear.
Manteo can no longer brag about a perfect record at home. It fought the good fight last week but suffered a stinging 6 - 0 defeat in overtime to Plymouth. The loss came about despite a quality game from senior Ian Johnson, who picked up 146 yards on the ground. This marked the 6th consecutive game in which Johnson had 100+ rushing yards.
Meanwhile, Gates County had all the answers against Camden County last week, winning 36 - 6. At 30 points, that marked Gates County's largest margin of victory so far this year.
The last time they met, Gates County got past Manteo 41 - 26. Will Manteo avenge its loss? We'll find out soon enough.
