The state's longest football winning streak came to an end Friday night, when Exeter defeated Bishop Guertin, 24-21, at Nashua's Stellos Stadium.
ÿ
BG entered the game with a 6-0 record and a 30-game winning streak. The Cardinals' last loss came against Exeter in the 2003 Division II semifinals.
ÿ
BG beat Exeter in last year's Division II title game.
ÿ
"We made too many mistakes, and Exeter is a team that doesn't make mistakes," BG coach Tony Johnson said. "What kind of scared me was that a lesser-quality team would beat us, and that would have been a shame. And that didn't happen tonight."
ÿ
Exeter's C.J. Friedman broke a 21-21 tie by kicking a 22-yard field goal with 4:58 remaining in the fourth quarter. BG missed a 31-yard field goal as time expired.
ÿ
"Just a great high school football game," Exeter coach Bill Ball said. "We never mentioned (BG's winning streak) once during the week. We really didn't. Not pregame. Not postgame."
ÿ
Exeter fullback Gabe Bourgeois, a junior, ran for 248 yards and three touchdowns.
ÿ
"(This) was my second chance at helping the team beat Bishop Guertin," Bourgeois said. "Last year we didn't succeed. I just didn't want that feeling again."
ÿ
The Blue Hawks rallied from a 21-14 halftime deficit. Exeter tied the game when it opened the third quarter with a 14-play, 99-yard scoring drive.
ÿ
The victory improved Exeter's record to 7-0. The Blue Hawks are the only unbeaten team in Division II.
ÿ
"I just hope we can build off it," Ball said. "The lesson learned is never quit. Hang in."
ÿ
The other marquee game on last weekend's schedule featured Division I Pinkerton Academy and Massachusetts power Brockton - two of the best teams in New England.
ÿ
Pinkerton improved its record to 7-0 with a 34-14 triumph. The Astros rushed for 281 yards in the victory.
ÿ
This weekend's most attractive contest will be in Division III, where Plymouth (7-0) will tangle with Portsmouth (7-0) in Portsmouth. The winner will earn the No. 1 seed for the Division III playoffs.
ÿ
Plymouth has won seven of the last nine Division III championships. Portsmouth dropped to Division III from Division II after the 2005 season.

Boys Soccer: Kapotis Reaches Goal
ÿ
Woodsville striker Dimitri Kapotis set the state's goal-scoring record by scoring twice in a 2-1 victory over Lisbon last Friday.
ÿ
Kapotis has 126 goals during his four-year varsity career. Calvary Christian's James Chase set the previous record of 125 goals during the 1998 season.
ÿ
Kapotis has scored at least one goal in 14 of Woodsville's 15 games this season. He'll have a chance to add to his record when the Engineers (14-0-1) wrap up the regular season with a home game against Sunapee on Friday.
ÿ
Kapotis entered his senior season with 81 goals.
ÿ
Two other milestones were reached last week: Phil Petrozzi became Gilford's all-time scoring leader, and Moultonborough's Tom Maggio set the school record for career goals.
ÿ
Petrozzi collected a hat trick in a 5-0 victory against Inter-Lakes, which gave him 172 points in his varsity career. Maggio raised his goal total to 66 by scoring twice against Nute.
