Minnesota River recap Oct. 23, 2012
Sibley East extended the longest winning streak in Minnesota River this week by beating Le Sueur-Henderson, 41-0. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Wolverines.
Sibley East took down the Giants 41-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
Watertown-Mayer's dynamic duo of Nick Tschida and Luke Sandquist proved tough for Mayer Lutheran to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Tschida threw for 137 yards and one touchdown and Sandquist had 84 yards receiving. Mark Sandquist helped Watertown-Mayer's passing attack out by catching two balls for 53 yards.
Joel Burfeind was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 90 yards on 16 carries as the Crusaders fell to the Crusaders. Teammate Philip Burfeind added to the ground attack by rushing for 82 yards.
Jeremiah Grimsley provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Mayer Lutheran defeated Watertown-Mayer. He completed seven passes for 124 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 35 yards. Grimsley's favorite target this week was Anthony Gruenhagen, who caught five passes for 79 yards.
Dean Aurich's team's Grimsley and Tanner Luebke have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Grimsley has thrown for 969 yards this season, while Luebke, a 5-foot-6 receiver, has 16 catches for 378 yards. Joe Reinert from Craig Johnson's team leads the league in rushing with 901 yards.
Belle Plaine/Holy Family Academy made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 10,622 from 10,913. The improvement was the result of 27-7 victory over Norwood-Young America last week.
